Validating Tax Status of Grantees

Foundation Source advises that Private foundations must validate the exempt status of a nonprofit before making a grant and must do so each and every time, even if granting to the same organization. If a foundation grants to an organization that has not maintained its status as an IRS designated public charity, it could result in significant tax penalties…”

The Economist does a nice job providing context for Argentina’s default yesterday. Argentina has and is likely to continue to be a ripe area of opportunity for Hillview’s managers in the Emerging Market Credit space.

Eric Fine, manager of the Van Eck Unconstrained Emerging Bond Fund with whom we have invested, was recently quoted in Investment News on the default: “Argentina can and will pay its debts, but that the negotiations with the hedge funds will have to conclude before any investors can be paid interest, leading to the default… We’ve liked Argentina – it’s been a good performer for us. It offers good upside relative to downside. We want to have exposure. However, because we think its a bumpy path, we want to do two things: one, have some portion of our investment invested tactically and to avoid the most volatile bonds that are the most directly affected by the court rulings.”
